Jurassic World is an action romp that plays like a night club remix of a top forty hit from the early 90’s. Continuous overt and covert references to the original masterwork won’t let you forget how terrifying and truly awesome Jurassic Park was the first 3 times you watched it. The nostalgia is an enjoyable aspect of the film but only in an ironic, hipster sort of way. Without the established legacy of its ancestor film, Jurassic World would be relegated to a really good Sci-Fi Chanel original movie. The visual effects are stunning and perfectly executed, but perfect visual execution comes standard with major contemporary films. Anyone who expected Jurassic World to be a thinking man’s movie would have simply been foolish but those who hoped for moral lessons from an engaging story told through moments of terror and meaningful characters would be disappointed. The film perfectly portrays the grandiose, hyperbolic nature of modern entertainment and amusements by acting as a marquee perpetrator. While the film’s shallow villains are picked off one by one, there is no clear comment in what is right or wrong in the world of the movie or the movie’s world. But maybe that’s okay. It is just a film.about dinosaurs.
